This guide explains how to:
- Install Distrobox on Fedora
- Create an Arch Linux container
- Enable NVIDIA GPU support
- Install and use AUR inside Arch
- Export GUI applications back to Fedora
- Troubleshoot common errors
Install Distrobox on Fedora
sudo dnf install distroboxInstall Podman if not already installed:
sudo dnf install podmanVerify installation:
distrobox --versionCreate an Arch Linux container
Create the container (recommended lowercase name):
distrobox create --name arch --image archlinux:latestIf you want NVIDIA GPU support (recommended for CUDA, AI, gaming, or GPU rendering), create the container with explicit NVIDIA integration:
distrobox create \
--name arch \
--image archlinux:latest \
--nvidiaWhat --nvidia does:
- Mounts NVIDIA device files into the container
- Shares host NVIDIA driver libraries
- Enables CUDA / OpenGL / Vulkan acceleration inside Arch
Requirements before using --nvidia:
- NVIDIA drivers must be correctly installed on Fedora (host).
nvidia-smimust work on the host system.- You must NOT use
sudo distrobox create(rootless is recommended).
Verify host GPU before creating the container:
nvidia-smiIf this works on Fedora, the GPU will work inside the container. Enter the container:
distrobox enter archFirst-time Arch setup
Update the system:
sudo pacman -SyuInstall build tools required for AUR:
sudo pacman -S base-devel gitInstall yay (AUR helper)
git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/yay.git
cd yay
makepkg -siTest installation:
yay -S google-chromeInstalling WhatsApp from AUR (example)
Search for the correct package name:
yay -S whatsapp-for-linuxIf prompted for a clean build:
- Choose
Afor clean build - Press
qto exit diff view - Confirm with
Y
Launch the application:
whatsapp-for-linuxExport Arch apps to Fedora
To make an installed Arch application available in the Fedora menu:
distrobox-export --app whatsapp-for-linuxNVIDIA GPU usage inside the container
Ensure the NVIDIA driver works on the Fedora host:
nvidia-smiInside Arch, install utilities:
sudo pacman -S nvidia-utilsTest the GPU:
nvidia-smiFor hybrid GPU systems (Optimus), force NVIDIA usage:
__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia program-nameCommon mistakes & troubleshooting
Mistake: deleting ~/.cache during setup
Do not run:
rm -rf ~/.cacheDistrobox stores required files in:
~/.cache/distrobox/If broken:
distrobox rm arch
rm -rf ~/.cache/distroboxThen recreate the container.
Error: "crun: ptsname: Inappropriate ioctl for device"
Possible causes:
- Interrupted container setup
- Terminal session issue
Fix:
podman system resetOr simply reboot / logout-login.
Remove the container
distrobox rm archKey notes
- Arch inside Distrobox does NOT affect Fedora
- Home directory is shared
- GPU, sound, and themes are integrated
- You can safely experiment with AUR
